Myrl A. Smith, 95, of Sanford, died at his home on August 19, 2017.Myrl was born on February 24, 1922 to Henry and Florence (Smith) Jackman in Enfield, New Hampshire where he grew up and attended local schools, graduating from Enfield High School in 1939. Following high school he attended the University of New Hampshire in Durham, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in engineering in 1943. Myrl proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After completing his enlistment he worked for the government as a civilian engineer helping to design submarines until retiring from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1972.Myrl enjoyed collecting stamps and postcards from around the world. He and his wife owned and operated an antique store in York Corner for several years called "Granny's Barn." He also liked to go bowling for many years at the Bowl-A-Rama in Sanford. Myrl will be remembered as a quiet man who enjoyed spending time at home with his family. He will be dearly missed. Myrl was predeceased by his wife, Arlene Smith in 2004.Surviving are two sons, Bruce Smith and his wife Manda Jackson and Bryan Smith and his wife Debbie, all of Sanford; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his cousins, Pat Jackman Price of Enfield, New Hampshire and Louise Randall of Putnam, Connecticut; his brother-in-law, Ken Rounds and his wife Karla of Henderson, Nevada; his nieces and nephews, Terry and Tricia Taylor of Danbury, New Hampshire, Dawn Kinevich of Florida and Wanda Smith and her husband Jerry.At Myrl's request arrangements will be private.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer's Association, 383 US Route 1, #2C, Scarborough, Maine 04074.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
